So for almost a year we've had a laptop with an intel AGN wireless card. We just got a Linksys WRT160N router, and we can't get an N connection. There are still G devices on the network (older laptop and Wii) but even when I set the router to N only, no luck. Intel's drive update utility showed no update available for the wireless NIC. WTF is going on?

I didn't know that was something you had to check. I'll try to look at that tonight. There's no trouble with G and N devices playing on the same network is there?

Everything was set right, just wouldn't play. Returned the Linksys and got a Netgear...will see how that goes. The Linksys kept dropping connections anyway.

Yeah, I am tired of buying routers that come with an out of date firmware, and won't work right out of the box. to me, there is just something wrong with the way most consumer level routers are packaged and sold.

Hmm, strange. I bought my sis that exact same router just a few months back. I took her with me to Fry's to pick it up. I helped her hook it up to use with her Dell laptop. Easiest setup I ever did. I plugged it into the DSL modem and the AC on the wall. Then I connected her laptop to it with the ethernet cable that came with it. Installed the software that came with it, ran through the steps, unplugged the cable, connected over wifi and a few minutes later we were done and she kicked me out so she could watch shows on Hulu. Yeah, you're welcome sis. :P
Maybe you just got a bad one. It happens.
