If you were going to choose a certification path today, which would you choose, trying to consider which would be the best to choose for near or future job opportunities?
MCITP: Server Administrator <--- yes, I know this is like MCSA and "Enterprise Administrator" is like MCSE MCITP: Enterprise Administrator MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator MCITP: Database Administrator Hopefully by noon tomorrow (Tuesday) I am going to be scheduling my first exam. Thanks |

My own opinion and everyone has one, but personally, I don't see a future in systems administration of any sort. It can get you far but it dead ends. I see network administration having far more opportunies. Also DBA's, business/security analysts. That sort of thing. If it were me and I had to choose from that list, I'd probably go with the Database Admin cert.

I have been wondering about the whole database thing and wondering if I should go that way. |

You know, another thing to consider (this is a bit off topic but something I've been thinking a lot about lately) is basically to say screw all the certs and job search stuff. Employers these days don't pay much, they have far too many demands and employees always get the raw deal. I will get my CCNA (or at least try) this summer. And plus, we spend all this time/energy in learning stuff to get a cert only for that cert to become obsolete after a short period of time. So I was thinking of starting my own business. Basically just do consulting for small businesses. Name my own price. I figure with two decent certs under my belt (SCSA and hopefully the CCNA) that would qualify me to do it. If you went down the database admin road, perhaps you could do something similar? Just get consulting gigs at businesses. I think a lot of them would be willing to pay, they just don't really know what they need/want and probably don't want to commit to hiring a full timer and just need someone to guide the way and get them started.
